COMMUNION

THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF AUTHORITY TO PERFORM COMMUNION:

Within many church faiths such as Protestant, Methodist, Catholic and Lutheran, communion is recognized as a sacramental practice. As Christian or Non-denominational believers we recognize communion as a symbolic practice, which gives us the authority to offer communion to other believers within our church. We recognize that the church is any place where two or more gather in the name of Christ.

COMMUNION IN ASSISTEED LIVING COMMUNITIES

Many people in these types of facilities have minimal issues with their dexterity and can easily spill using the small cups used for communion, so this method of communion I have used and found to be the simplest method for this audience.

ITEMS NEEDED

Goblet or Chalet

Grape Juice

Dinner Roll (I like using a decorative platter for the bread before the communion)

PERFORMING THE ACTUAL COMMUNION WITH SENIORS AND PEOPLE OF DISABILITIES:

  • Show the Bread and express “This bread is a symbol of the body of Christ given to you.”

  • Show the Juice and express “This juice is a symbol of the blood of Christ spilled to wash away our sins.”

  • Offer particles to one individual at a time, first the bread stating “The body of Christ.” Then with the goblet of juice you state “The blood of Christ.” They take their piece of bread and dip it into the juice.

Even though there is a sample communion in each of these worship services, the services are here as guides. Nothing says you have to stick to these formats, it is only a place to get started when you do not know how to start. In life God's mission is personal for each of us. So we need to make the ministry personal as well.

John 6:53-58 - Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”
